Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, playing a
vital role in maintaining homeostasis through neuroinflammation and immune
responses. However, in the context of Alzheimer’s disease, their role becomes
much more complex and remains a topic of debate. While microglia are
implicated in several pathological processes associated with AD, the exact
mechanisms by which they contribute to synaptic loss and neuronal death are still
unclear. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of the current
understanding of microglia’s involvement in AD and we will introduce recent
findings to offer new perspectives on whether microglia should be viewed as the
« super-hero » defending the brain or the « villain » driving neurodegeneration.
