The IPMC's functional exploration platform features a single-channel photometry device. Photometry is a technique that allows for the real-time detection and quantification of neuronal activity in awake mice. This is achieved by capturing the fluorescence emitted by the neurons of the equipped animal when their cytosolic calcium concentration increases following excitation. This principle requires that the animals express a fusion protein combining Green Fluorescent Protein with calmodulin. This necessitates genetic recombination driven by a promoter specific to the targeted neuronal populations. Stereotaxically implanted cannulas guide the optical fibers to the target structure. Our photometry system can be used with most of the behavioral analysis devices available on the platform.
