The low availability of existing light at the level of the forest influences the growth, the production and survival of the trees and the distribution of the biomass annually at the level of the plant, in the species that pass a part or all of its life in dark conditions. Berberis serrato-dentata (Berberidaceae), is a dark-tolerant evergreen shrub that grows in the Nothofagus pumilio grove. It studies the production of brotes and hojas, the survival of leaves and the participation of the annual air biomass. The emergence of brotes and trees begins on December after flowering, when the trees and other shrubs in the bosque have produced their crops. The growth of the brotes extended for less than a month. It will mainly be produced in short lengths (5-8 mm in length, 54-91% of the brotes produced). The hojas will emerge in a syncronic form in the short circles and follow a combined pattern (sincronic and gradual) in the long brotes. Las hojas de B. serrato-dentata survived during 16 months and coexisted with the cohort of leaves of the following verano during five months. The hojas represent between the 77-79% of the annual air biomass and the heights of the 1-23 %. At the level of the air part of the plant, it is intended annually the greatest proportion of recursos for the formation of the light capture organs with the expense of a minimum inversion of the biomass into support structures, a predominance of brotes cortos with vertical hojas and a reduced vertical exploration of the space on part of the plant.
